Set in 1879 Paris. An orphan girl dreams of becoming a ballerina and flees her rural Brittany for Paris, where she passes for someone else and accedes to the position of pupil at the Grand Opera house. Ballerina, directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin (The Triplets of Belleville), and starring the voice of Elle Fanning, opens in Paris and London in December. The Weinstein Company is expected to release the film in the U.S. sometime during 2017. Here’s the trailer:
Ballerina is being released by Gaumont in Europe. Theodore Ty, who animated on Dreamworks Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, directed the animation. The $30 million English-language production employed ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied (Black Swan) to supervise the choreography. Motion capture was used to record Millepied’s performance.
