Calm Morning: “Adventures Through Storyboarding” at Academy Museum

Calm Morning: Adventures Through Storyboarding is the latest in a new series of special programs at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, California. On Saturday, May 28th, Pixar veteran Ronnie del Carmen will share the art of storyboarding in animation followed by an accommodative screening of Up (2009). The galleries open at 9am – more details below.

Calm Mornings create an environment for all visitors to enjoy less-sensory-stimulating spaces with moderated sound and lighting displays. ASL interpretation provided. Advance purchase of admission required. Youth 17 and under are free.

9–10am | Stories of Cinema, Levels 2 and 3

Explore selected galleries within Stories of Cinema, including Story and Inventing Worlds and Characters: Animation, with moderated sound and lighting displays. Some spaces may be dark; signage will communicate dark spaces to visitors.

Create your own adventure with our drop-in storyboarding activity, inspired by filmmaker Ronnie del Carmen’s storyboards from Up (2009), featured in our Inventing Worlds and Characters: Animation gallery.

UP (2009) ACCOMMODATIVE SCREENING WITH INTRODUCTION FROM RONNIE DEL CARMEN

11am–12:45pm | Ted Mann Theater, Lower Level

Open-captioned film screening with lights on, low sound, and the option to move around and speak throughout. Separate $5 screening admission ticket required. Register here.

Just to note, the Calm Mornings are tailored for a neurodiverse audience or families with children on the autism spectrum because of the moderated sound and lighting displays in the galleries, but all are welcome to attend.
