Coco loves magic. She thinks it’s wonderful and she wants to brighten the world with it.

But there’s a problem. Witches guard their magic. They don’t want “outsiders” (i.e. ordinary humans, or “muggles” as named in another franchise) to potentially misuse it. So they keep their craft a secret.

Then Coco, daughter of a country seamstress, gets a magic book and pen by a mysterious stranger. One day she sneaks a peek at a visiting wizard, Qifrey, casting a spell. With her magic book, she tries to imitate his procedure.  The result is catastrophic: she accidentally turns her home—and her mother—to crystal.

Desperate to undo the spell, Coco begins training as a witch under Qifrey’s guidance. She becomes a roommate with another apprentice, Agott, who complicates her life with her snobbish behavior. They train with two other girls, Tetia and Richeh, and together they face dangerous magical creatures, the law-enforcing Knights Moralis, and the rogue coven known as the Brimmed Caps.

It’s the magical world of Witch Hat Atelier—“Atelier” being French for a private workshop for  artists. The story began as a manga created, written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama, published by Kodansha since July 2016. As of March 2026, the series has sold over 7.5 million copies in Japan. It has won multiple honors, including two Harvey Awards (2020 and 2025), three Manga Barcelona Awards (2018, 2022, 2023), and an Eisner Award (2020). Naturally, such popularity spurs interest in an anime, and so, Bug Films of Tokyo has produced a 13-episode season that began streaming on Crunchyroll on April 6, 2026.

The English-speaking cast features Anjali Kunapaneni as the irrepressible Coco. Kunapaneni has over 145 roles in her resume, including Roy in Pokémon Horizons, Courtney in Pokémon Masters, Pokémon Dipplin, Tarountula, & Pincurchin in Pokémon, Yuki Tsukumo in Jujutsu Kaisen, and Lalah Sune in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Her website is here

Joshua A. Waters stars as Qifrey, the compassionate witch (For some reason, male mages are not called “wizards” or “warlocks” in this show). Waters’s voice can also be heard as Miyano from Sasaki and Miyano, Shuto Sendou from Blue Lock, and Inu-Oh from INU-OH, among over 69 other credits in TV and video games. Visit his website here.

Madeleine Morris, who hails from Texas, performs the moody Agott. She lists over 161 voiceover credits, including Rudeus in Mushoku Tensei, Vegapunk Lilith in One Piece, and Zazie the Beast in Trigun Stampede. Her expertise extends to stage plays, writing/script localizing and puppetry. Learn more at her website.

On May 27, I spoke with these talented actors regarding their characters, their craft and their careers. They have a special message for their fans at the end.

Currently streaming on Crunchyroll with new episodes every Monday at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET. The anime carries a TV-PG for fantasy violence.

Special thanks to Stephanie Wong, Senior Publicist, Streaming Content & Awards, and her team from Crunchyroll.
