Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood is based on Machiko Kyo’s original manga that was first serialized in 2009 and ended in 2010. The manga’s feature length film adaptation first released in Japan on March 30th, 2025, and more recently debuted in the U.S. this past September 4th, 2026. Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood marks Yukimitsu Ina and studio SASAYURI’s first feature film. The studio was founded by a former Studio Ghibli animator, Hitomi Tateno. Veteran animators such as Akihiko Yamashita and Shinji Otsuka, who previously worked on Ghibli classics Princess Mononoke and The Boy and the Heron, came together to work on the project alongside an up-and-coming younger generation of animators. From the same composer behind A Silent Voice and Chainsaw Man’s brilliant scores, Kensuke Ushio also crafted a breathtakingly fitting score for the film.
